Carlisle Floyd tries to make his opera 'Susannah' accessible

His first opera, being performed in O.C. this month, premiered in 1956.

With more than 230 productions and 700 performances in the U.S. and Europe, Carlisle Floyd's "Susannah" is one of the most popular American operas, second perhaps only to "Porgy and Bess."

Bid for night with Hanks, Braff and Applegate?

Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Annette Bening, William Shatner, Christina Applegate, Sean Astin, Zach Braff and other celebrities will perform a staged reading of "The Taming of the Shrew" -- with live music and songs provided by Lyle Lovett -- as a benefit for Shakespeare Festival/LA Monday evening at UCLA's Freud Playhouse.

Architect Rem Koolhaas saw what Vegas didn't have, not what it needed

Dutch architect's Guggenheim Hermitage Museum closes at the Venetian Hotel, evidence that the city's visitors seek glitz and gambling, not art and culture.

LAS VEGAS -- Like a lot of Las Vegas marriages, the one between the Venetian Hotel and the Guggenheim Museum was born of some seriously misplaced optimism. Presided over by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, with St. Petersburg's Hermitage Museum standing by as a comically out-of-place bridesmaid, the union was planned in the late 1990s, when the Guggenheim brand and the transformative power of high-design architecture both seemed unassailable.
